December 26th, 2025
Its beach and stone fruit season! With the hot days it’s common for over-exertion, sun exposure and party season to increase the burden on our digestive systems creating what Ayurvedic Practitioners call “excess digestive fire” which can result in reflux, heartburn, and general digestive upset.
Here are some Naturopathic tips to cool off and a qualm that belly fire this season.
Cooling Foods
Fruit and Vegetables with high water content:
Mint, Cucumber, Asparagus, Squash, Zucchini, Celery, Grapes, Strawberries, Raspberries, Cherries, Watermelon, Rockmelon and Fresh Coconut
Bitters
Bitter Greens to stimulate digestive enzymes and improve absorption of other foods;
Rocket, Dandelion Greens, Kale, Spinach, Chard, and Beet Greens.
Dandelion Tea, a cooling bitter herb to stimulate digestive and liver with an impressive nutrient profile.
High Enzyme Foods
High enzyme foods to improve digestion and reduce inflammation;
Mango, Papaya, Pineapple, Apple Cider Vinegar
Soaked and sprouted legumes to improve bio-availability of nutrients, lower lectins/phytates and minimise burden on the digestive system (Moong Dal, Adzuki Beans, Black-Eyed Peas, Chick Peas, Red Lentils, Mung Beans, Pinto Beans, White Beans
Cooling Herbs fresh, dried or as teas (Dill, Coriander, Peppermint, Spearmint and Rose)
Hydration!
Try to hit 2-3 litres of water intake per day. Add a pinch of celtic salt to improve absorption. During big days in the sun trial some electrolyte blends or naturally electrolyte rich coconut water to replenish nutrients lost through sweating and exertion.
Avoid Excessive Consumption of Alcohol
Heating foods such as chili, red wine, red meat and highly processed meat/sugars/grains. (All classic holiday season foods).
How to Cool Down Overall;
Hydrotherapy in the way of cool showers, cool swims and even a cooling towel on the forehead is an awesome way to bring down our internal body heat on a sunny day. Being mindful of too much sun; opt for shadier options such as rock pools or plunge pools with some overhead protection and make sure to slap on a good mineral based zinc.
However, if you find you still struggle with overheating, difficulty regulating temperatures or signs of an inflamed digestive system, it may be time to investigate your health further by working with a naturopath
